Holiday with several families: how do you split the costs fairly?

Baltic Sea beach with pier, beach chairs, sandcastle and families

Into one big holiday home with friends' families: the children play together, the parents get more peace – and per family it is often cheaper than going alone.

Arguments are usually only about money: do children pay in full? What if one family arrives later? Who paid for the shopping? Best to agree on the rules in advance.

Sample budget per person

2 families with 4 adults and 4 children, 7 nights in summer, holiday home on Usedom (Baltic Sea), travel in two cars

Travel by car (shared per car)€30–60
Holiday home (7 nights, split 8 ways)€180–320
Tourist tax (children often free)€10–20
Food and drinks€175–280
Day trips (swimming pool, boat, bikes)€40–90
Total per personapprox. €430–770

For a family with 2 adults and 2 children, that is roughly €1,750 to €3,100 for the week.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

Do children pay for the accommodation?
That is up to you. Often children pay half and toddlers nothing. Split&Fly calculates with age groups and shows the share per family.
Split per person or per family?
For accommodation and food usually per person (with a child share), for things like the final cleaning often per family. Both can be set per item.

Split the costs fairly

In Split&Fly you enter flights, accommodation and expenses, search for offers and see straight away what each person and each family pays – even when children pay less, someone stays for fewer nights or isn’t in on everything. At the end, the settlement shows who transfers how much to whom.
